Diversity, innovation and female-leadership: highlights of the Chilean delegation at GDC

22/07/2021

The Game Developers Conference (GDC) brings the game development community together to exchange ideas, solve problems, and shape the future of the industry across five days of education, inspiration, and networking.

This year, Chile is exhibiting a delegation of 21 Game Studios with an exportable offer that includes content development and services provision for mobile and desktop, game consoles (Xbox One, PS4, PS Vita, Wii U, 3DS, Switch), Web (HTML5),  VR / AR and also Work for Hire, Co-Development and Licensing services.

"We are thrilled to join the Game Developers Conference, an event with high networking and business potential for the gaming industry and also supported by ProChile who had such an important role in helping us showcase our work to the world", says Rodrigo Contreras, CEO of Chile’s biggest independent games company, Gamaga.

Gamaga’s titles have received world-wide recognition and have been downloaded hundreds of millions of times generating significant revenues: Banana Kong, their first mobile development, was so popular it achieved over 135 Million downloads, and it is still played until this day. The simulation game Operate Now: Hospital generated over 30 million downloads in its first year and their latest game, Red Crimes: Hidden Murders is about to be launched with the participation of IEntertainment and Discovery Investigation.

''We've been participating in GDC for seven years, it's already a tradition for us to check on new businesses and especially to keep in touch with current clients and partners. We are grateful for the virtual event but we must admit we miss the trust based on direct interactions." says Julio Marambio, CEO of Octeto Studios, a company that creates interactive experiences with a positive emotional impact.

Octeto is a Game Development Studio based in Santiago de Chile, specialized in tailored game development. Last year, they launched their first owned production called Cyber Ops, an innovative take on the stealth / hacking genre that explores the relationship between the operator and real people on the other end of the line through immersive narrative and challenging gameplay.

Another highlight of the Chilean delegation at GDC is the presence of powerful women in gaming such as Fernanda Contreras, COO Gamaga, featured in the 2018 edition of "Women in Gaming: 100 Professionals of Play" and Maureen Berho, CEO of Niebla Games, winner of InspiraTec Award in 2016 and former Board of Directors of the Association of Video Game Developers in Chile.
