Chilean pisco in Expo Osaka 2025 Makun Chile

Chile celebrates a special Pisco Day at Expo 2025 Osaka with a “Tasting Event & Cocktail Bar” at the national pavilion.

The event will take place on Saturday, September 6, between 5:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m., as part of the trade mission organized by ProChile and Pisco Chile.

Eight Chilean brands will participate in the event: Pisco Alto Atacama, Pisco K11, Pisco Paitanás, Pisco Don Gudelio, Pisco Aba, Pisco Mistral, Pisco Capel, and Pisco Waqar. These companies, from the northern regions of Chile, Atacama, and Coquimbo, will present their products and cocktails made with Chilean pisco.

What is Chilean pisco?

Chilean pisco is a premium brandy distilled from wine. Its production consists of four main stages: growing and harvesting the pisco grapes; vinification for pisco production; distillation of the wine to obtain pisco; and bottling in consumer units.

Pisco is made from 13 varieties of aromatic grapes grown in an optimal climate. Pisco can be white or transparent (a versatile fruit spirit, distilled between one and three times, with a maximum of six months of aging in inactive wood or steel tanks).

On the other hand, pisco that has been aged in barrels can be either reserve (between 6 and 12 months of aging in active wood, usually raulí or oak) or aged (having been aged for at least one year in active barrels).

Pisco is undoubtedly Chileans' favorite spirit. In fact, it accounts for approximately 50% of the spirits market in Chile. Thus, 90% of Chilean pisco production is consumed in Chile.

Chilean pisco in Japan

Since 2023, ProChile has promoted the “Chilean Pisco: First Spirit” campaign, with seminars, tastings, and visits by Japanese importers to Chile. In the first half of 2025, pisco exports to Japan reached US$79,000, an increase of 39.9% over the previous year¹.

The presence at Expo Osaka 2025 is part of an internationalization strategy that highlights the versatility of pisco in cocktails and its designation of origin, in force since 1931, which is the oldest in Latin America and the second oldest in the world. This means that it is produced under the strictest quality standards, resulting in a unique product. This designation limits its production to the regions of Atacama and Coquimbo. Any other distillate produced outside these regions cannot be called pisco².

Chilean pisco has been the star of the “Barra Permanente” (Permanent Bar) in the Chilean pavilion. This bar is open every day and on Saturdays is dedicated exclusively to cocktails made with national distillates.

Ignacio Fernández, Director General of ProChile: “The internationalization strategy for Chilean pisco, together with the Pisco Chile association, is carried out under the campaign 'Chilean Pisco, First Spirit' and Japan is one of the focus markets, where since 2023 we have developed seminars, tastings, visits by bartenders, and brought importers to Chile, in addition to its prominent presence at the permanent alcohol bar in the Chilean pavilion at Expo Osaka. Pisco exports in the first half of this year reached US$79,000, up 39.9% from 2024, which makes us optimistic about continuing with this line of work”.
