Plank Roasted Chilean SalmonIn 2019, the United States was the top destination for Chilean salmon and trout exports. More importantly, Chile was the main supplier of fresh and chilled salmon fillets.

This first half of this year has been different in every way, but this Chilean industry has continued to work hard to continue delivering the natural flavor and nutrients of Chilean salmon to the U.S. market. James Griffin – Chilean Salmon Marketing Council, explains more about the work this industry has done in these months.

What is the challenge for Chilean aquaculture to increase its production in the midst of the pandemic?

Production levels in Chile do not require an increase to meet demand in the U.S. The U.S. market is not lacking supply from Chile. Chile has done an outstanding job producing fresh and frozen salmon for the U.S. market even during COVID-19 while significantly increasing food safety and hygiene protocols to ensure a safe and excellent product, as well as the wellness of all workers in Chile and throughout the supply chain.

What is the main market in which Chilean salmon is currently marketed and what demands is that market making in the face of the Covid-19 pandemic?

The largest market in the U.S. is Grocery Retail, due to closure of the foodservice and hospitality sector (hotels, restaurants, entertainment venues), as a result of COVID-19. Chilean Salmon farmers have strong and lasting relationships with all the major retailers, distributors, and foodservice companies and the U.S. and have worked hard to support and adjust to their constantly changing needs. Chile leads the way in responding to market demands and meeting the needs of its customers and partners in the U.S.

Consumers are demanding more frozen, more value added, and more fresh salmon from Chile – and our salmon farmers are meeting that demand.

How have the measures taken by governments, Chilean and foreign, affected the production and distribution capacity of the product?

The support of the Chilean authorities in keeping the salmon supply chains open, together with the significant investments made in worker safety and hygiene in the salmon-producing regions of Los Lagos, Aysén and Magallanes, which have been extremely well managed, have enabled the supply chains to remain open.

What are the health benefits for the final consumer, by preferring a product like salmon in their diet?

In terms of technology and processes, what aspects make Chilean salmon stand out from the international supply?

Chile has outstanding quality, consistency, and availability – all year round. Processing capacity and innovation, along with advanced hygiene practices make Chile the preferred choice for fresh and frozen salmon in the U.S.
