Once again, Chile will be attending one of the most important international fairs for the promotion of wine: Prowein 2018. This time, 64 wineries, a huge diversity of products and a group of small wine producers will all be at our Chilean pavilion, which this year measures 700m². A further 28 national participants will be outside of the pavilion, meaning that the scale of Chile’s participation at Prowein will be one of the greatest to date, amounting to 92 exhibitors.
Visitors will be able to sample a large variety of wines, including traditional Chilean vines which have been around for over 100 years. All are high-quality wines with Chile’s unique identity.
Over the course of the fair, Chile will be hosting a number of activities: specialised seminars; a review by Tim Atkin about his latest visit to Chile; wine tastings; a cooking show focusing on Chilean gastronomy; and a 3D space showcasing the city of Valparaíso, an icon of Chile’s tourism. Additionally, our Chilean sommeliers will be able to orientate those who wish to taste the wines on offer in our pavilion.

CHILE: Network of commercial agreements
With 26 free trade agreements signed with 64 economies, Chile has free access to the largest global markets.
Today Chile has preferential access to 64.1% of the world population and to 86.3% of global GDP.
Chile has outstanding conditions for producing wine. Our wine-producing regions are privileged by being surrounded by a unique geography of natural barriers, like the Pacific Ocean to the west, the Andes mountains to the east, the Atacama Desert to the north and the Patagonian ice sheets to the far south. They also benefit from a Mediterranean climate, so we can produce singular wines of excellent quality.
Chile’s wine regions extend from north to south and produce around 74 different varieties, each with its own characteristics. This means we can offer a very diverse range of great quality, personality, varietal character, intense colour and delicate aromas.
The history of Chilean wine began with the arrival of the Spaniards more than 400 years ago. In the 19th century, production was influenced by the French. Then, the industry was modernized during the 1970s when Miguel Torres brought new methods of production to Chile. This stimulated a development in the use of technology to make Chilean wines and marked the start of a trend towards innovation that is even stronger today.
Chile is now the world’s fourth biggest exporter of bottled wine and the biggest in the New World. This means it is one of the most important suppliers to consumers around the world, offering them a unique combination of diversity, quality, sustainability, innovation and country image.

Wines of Chile
Wines of Chile is the trade body dedicated to developing the international market for Chilean wine. Its mission is to strengthen the Chilean wine category in international markets, increasing its brand value and improving the industry’s profitability. It also seeks to raise awareness and boost the image of Chilean wine in international markets, highlighting the better quality and diversity of Chilean wine. Similarly Wines of Chile seeks to enhance association and cooperation among wineries and help them understand the export ecosytem. Its position is based on four pillars: Quality and diversity. Country image. Innovation and Sustainability.
Vidseca, the Association for Wine Wine Producers from the Secano de Cauquenes, works to recuperate ancestral grape varieties from the Maule region in the central-southern zone of Chile. Right the way through the process of cultivation, harvesting and traditional methods of preparation, they create wines with a unique signature which are sold in the international market.
The area of Cauquenes in the Maule region possesses hundred-year-old grape varieties, to be found among cities and their outer laying fields. In fact, wine is so rooted in the history of this area that, at the end of the 19th Century, the city became the seat for the first school of wine cultivation in Chile.
Today, Vidseca is looking to emphasise and conserve the heritage of wines in the area, placing special emphasis on the País variety.
Foods from Chile
Chile possesses geographic, climatic and human idiosyncrasies which give it a particularly unique character and which allow for incomparable conditions when it comes to the production of high-quality products whose attributes are appreciated globally.
The country has the clearest skies and the most important reserves of fresh water in the world. Furthermore, it boasts a unique geography and climate which, together with strict regulations, means that it is, from a phytosanitary point of view, effectively an island.
The Atacama Desert, the Andes mountain range, the Pacific Ocean and the Artic ices are all natural barriers which isolate food production from sanitary risks. Moreover, the climate is also exceptional, a fact which has allowed Chile to become one of the largest food producers in the world.
Nonetheless, this is also due in part to the many other internal factors and to the decisions taken by the country: the trade opportunities attained by Chile in past decades; policies which support understanding and development in production; and consolidation and internalization from the public sector, coupled with hard work in the private sector. All these factors have made Chile “a provider of food for the whole world”.

Chile’s Activities at Prowein 2018
Sunday 18th March / 12:00pm
- Opening Ceremony of the Chilean Pavilion at Prowein: We are pleased to welcome the Ambassador of Chile to Germany, Patricio Pradel, the Commercial Director of Chile to Germany, Diego Torres, as well as authorities from the world of wine.
- Review by Tim Adkin: Tim Adkin will be presenting his 2017 review of his trip to Chile, during which he had the opportunity to sample 1,055 wines, a record for the Chilean market.
Tuesday 20th March / 12:00pm
- Seminar with Tim Adkin: The master of wines will be hosting a seminar entitled “The best of the new Chile”, which will include a tasting.
- Cooking Show: An activity to showcase Chilean gastronomy, during which the main traditional dishes of the country will be presented along with paired wines.
- Valparaíso display: At this event, we will have a 3D space displaying Valparaíso, which is located in Chile’s central zone and an icon of the country’s tourism. In this virtual environment, visitors will be able to get to know the city and its attractions, which have turned the city into one of humanity’s most important assets.
