The Chilean audiovisual industry is composed of three different sectors:

  • Film industry: Includes finished products, co-production with foreign partners, and selling production services.
  • Advertising cinema: It involves the production of complete commercials and co-productions.
  • Television: This encompasses the distribution of finished products, as well as co-productions with international partners, such as television channels and production companies.

In the last decade, the Chilean industry has presented over 200 feature films, 200 short films and 200 documentaries in countries around the world. The primary destinations for these productions are the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Germany, and France.

This Chilean industry has received great receptions in prestigious international film festivals, such as Cannes and Berlinale, where some Chilean productions have been recognized with different awards.

Cine/OTT’s and series:

Since 2009, the Chilean cinema, OTT’s and series sectors have won 240 international prizes, including the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film to “A Fantastic Woman”, directed by Sebastian Lelio. These awards are a demonstration of the high quality achieved by the Chilean film industry, according to the standards of the most demanding international markets.

Production Services & Advertising:

The Chilean advertising industry has become an important partner with many recognized international brands as a premier location for commercial filming, due to the diversity of landscapes and natural locations that the country offers, as well as an advanced technological base and know-how of its industry professionals.

There is also an important synergy between production services and the local film industry, as both sectors have equipment and key technological services required for their international expansion. This industry is not only successful in terms of promoting the quality and professionalism of the production industry, but also serves as a vehicle to show the world all that Chile has to offer as far as country image and tourism.

Animation and documentaries:

In recent years, the Chilean animation industry has won several international awards for the quality of its productions. The most notable award was The Oscar for “Bear Story”, (Punkrobot Studio, 2016) has been one of the most important recognitions for the local industry. Thanks to this Academy Award, Chile has been able to further demonstrate its level of quality and maturity for its animation industry as a whole. The industry has also been consistently present at the major events within the sector, such as the Annecy International Animated Film Festival (France).

The Chilean documentary industry has also received awards at world-renowned competitions. In 2015, "The Pearl Button", by Patricio Guzmán, won the Silver Bear for Best Screenplay in Berlinale (Germany), and “Allende mi abuelo Allende”, by Marcia Tambutti, was awarded with the "Golden Eye" for Best Documentary in Cannes (France). This industry has showcased its high level production at Dok Leipzig and Sheffield Doc / Fest, among other relevant international events, demonstrating that it is prepared to compete in demanding markets like the United States, where every day it is necessary to give new content to the audience, which have many different alternatives to be informed and amused.
