Visit us at Stand B-100, Hall 5.1

From 11 to 15 October, more than 7.000 exhibitors from the publishing industry will gather at a new edition of the Frankfurt Book Fair.

Chile will participate once again, along with over 100 countries, with a delegation which will fill a pavilion in Hall 5.1.

The Chilean stand will be inaugurated by the Ambassador of Chile to Germany, Mr. Patricio Pradel, and writer Raúl Zurita, National Prize for Literature (2000), Pablo Neruda Poetry Prize (2006) and recent winner of the 17th edition of the José Donoso Ibero-American Letters Prize, which awards work by Spanish-speaking writers.

Zurita was selected by a jury made up of German doctor Elmar Schmidt, from the University of Bonn, among other representatives of the international literary world, who recognized the value of the poetic, essayistic and visual works of the author, notable among which are his latest works: "INRI" (2003), "Poemas muertos" (2006), "Las ciudades de agua" (2007) and "Zurita (2011).

Manfred Engelbert will do a reading from this distinguished writer's work, with a German translation. Zurita, together with Sergio Chejfec, will also be one of the protagonists at the conversation table, “Getting to the bottom of oneself,” open to the public on Friday, 13 October at 11:00 a.m. in the Instituto Cervantes.

The Frankfurt Book fair has also been selected as the setting to present the “Chilean Comic Book Catalog” in Germany, which was launched in early 2017 at the Angoulême International Comics Festival in France, and which compiles one hundred years of history of graphic narrative in Chile.

This genre's golden age was from 1945-1973, when the first comic books were published by ZIG-ZAG and Condorito, Chilean cultural ambassador to the world, was born, opening the doors to a generation of cartoonists, who in 2016 saw five of their representatives star on the first Spanish panel in the history of Comic-Con in San Diego, California, USA.

These were all invited by the Department of Spanish and Portuguese of the University of Texas, to show the diverse Chilean comic scene in the lecture: “Latin American Comic Arts: Dialogues and perspectives from Chilean artists and critics”, demonstrating the internationally acclaimed relevance of this creative sector of the country.

This year, Chilean comics marked a new milestone in the globally recognized event with its first stand, the only Latin American country present.

The participation of Chile in the FIL Frankfurt 2017 will be marked by the national pavilion dedicated to Violeta Parra, as part of a series of celebrations in Chile and abroad to mark the 100 years since the birth of the artist, continuing other events in international book fairs where Chile has been present in 2017.

This particular event will include the presentation of the book, “Violeta Parra, Lieder aus Chile/Canciones de Chile”, a bilingual anthology of her work, translated by Manfred Engelbert.

Violeta Parra's sheer genius and arduous creative work began to emerge at the early age of 7 years, when she learned to play the guitar and sing. Her social and cultural contribution was recognized internationally during her lifetime, achieving what none had done before her: to be the first Latin American artist to exhibit her work at the Louvre Museum in Paris.

Her legacy includes hundreds of songs, poems, sculptures, visual art, weavings and musical compositions rich in humanity, such as the song "Gracias a la vida", a melody that has been performed by world-class artists such as Shakira, Miguel Bosé, Mercedes Sosa, Charly García and Laura Pausini, among others.
